7. Betting Rules

7.1 Placing A Bet

  1. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are familiar with these rules or the terms of a particular bet and the registering of details with Marathon and accepting the Terms & Conditions will be deemed as acceptance of these rules.
  2. Your bet is accepted the moment it is recorded on our system in accordance with the conditions described in these rules. On pressing 'Place Bet', a message will appear stating 'Your bet has been placed, thank you', this indicates the bet has been accepted. If this message does not appear, you can confirm the status of your bet by checking the bet history or by contacting customer services. If after pressing 'place bet' the odds increase from those displayed in your browser, then the greater odds will be accepted without any additional messages.

We provide one click betting option for your convenience; however we cannot accept any liability for any losses incurred as a result of any deliberate or accidental use of this feature. If you lose connection with the website during the placement of a bet you should contact customer services to check whether your bet was placed or not. Once connection is re-established you can check your bet history to see what bets were placed prior to the connection loss.
  3. Marathon cannot be held responsible for any errors and/or omissions, human or palpable, which result in the incorrect displaying of prices, entering of results, listing of runners or event start times. Whilst every attempt will be made to ensure all information on the website is accurate we reserve the right to correct any obvious errors, either by voiding bets placed at the incorrect odds or changing the odds to the correct ones. In these instances the customer will be emailed the details as soon as is possible. Should an error not be noticed prior to the commencement of an event, nor contact made with the customer, then such bets will be void, win or lose.
  4. Where the official 'Off' of a race or event is not announced, bets are accepted up to the displayed 'open until' time. If the 'open until' time is after the event has actually started, and the market is not a 'Live Betting' event, any selections will be made void if, at the time the bet was placed, the race or event was resolved or at a stage where the customer could have an indication of the outcome.
  5. In the event of there being a dispute regarding the time at which a bet was placed, the time at which it was recorded on our server will govern settlement.
  6. All bets will show on the Bet History page online and can be checked there at any time.
  7. We do not accept postal, facsimile, telex or text bets and if received will be void, win or lose.
  8. If your bet is outside the allowable limits the maximum stake per selection or bet is displayed onsite at the time of placing a bet.
  9. Marathon reserve the right to refuse all or any part of any bet without explanation.
  10. All odds displayed on site are for information only and subject to change at any time. The odds that apply to a particular bet will be those confirmed at the time of bet placement.
  11. All Latest Scores and/or Match Times displayed on a in- running market are for information purposes only. Whilst every effort is made to ensure their accuracy we can not be held responsible for any incorrect information displayed.
  12. Not all selections will be quoted for outright markets in some cases. You can email or call customer services to ask for any selection to be added to a market. However, for all settlement purposes, all selections will count whether they are displayed or not, unless the market specifically says that 'Only Quoted Selections Count'.
  13. Any returns will be credited back to that customer's account.
  14. No claims or disputes will be considered more than 12 weeks after the date the original bet was settled.
  15. All telephone calls to our Customer Care team are recorded on security tape in the interest of client confidentiality and to assist us in resolving queries and maintaining high standards of customer service. These recordings may be stored.

7.2 Maximum Winnings

  1. A bet is accepted on the basis that it is the investment of one customer only and the following are maximum amounts which can be won by any one customer on any one bet or series of bets, irrespective of the total stakes invested or wherever placed, in any 24 hour period. These maximums will still apply even if by taking prices the level of potential winnings exceeds these amounts.
  2. Should a number of bets containing the same selection(s) be placed, even if they are done in a series of bets, over one or more days, at differing odds, using more than one betting account and we have reason to believe they have originated from one customer or group/syndicate of customers acting together, then we reserve the right to limit the total payment of all those bets combined to the single maximum payout applicable in these rules.
  3. Where the bet contains selections from events where the limits are different, the maximum payout will be determined by the lowest level of any of the selections, irrespective of whether that particular selection wins or not.
  4. The limits apply to all bets irrespective of the individual stakes for a bet.
  5. Our maximum payouts are as follows. All amounts are shown in €'s but in all instances read as 'or the currency equivalent'.

7.3 Bet Settlement

  1. Bets are calculated using prices quoted in fractions. Bets will default to being settled as win only unless each way is selected. If an each way bet is inadvertently accepted on a win only market, or a decrease in the number of runners changes the place terms to win only, then the stakes for any each way bets placed will all be applied on that selection to win (i.e a €5 each way bet will become €10 to win).
  2. The place odds for an each way bet will be fixed at the time of acceptance and will be displayed on the website. The only exception to this is a horse race bet placed after the final declarations have been made, in which case the place terms applicable will be determined by the number of actual runners taking part. The place terms for any bet at SP will also be governed by the actual number of runners taking part. (see Horse & Greyhound racing sections for a detailed explanation of place terms).
  3. If a dead heat is declared in any event, half of the stake is applied to the selection at full odds and the other half is lost. If more than two dead heat, the stake is apportioned accordingly. This also applies to the place part of any event where the dead heat resulted in more selections being paid out as placed than the place odds determined when the bet was originally struck.
  4. All early prices and some fixed odds prices are subject to Tattersalls' Rule 4(c) in the event of any non runners. A fixed odds price that could attract a Rule 4 would be where stakes are returned on a Non Runner (i.e. A Golf Group bet) All Ante Post bets taken on a 'All in Run or Not basis' will not be subject to a Rule 4 deduction as bets on Non Runners will be losers. See the Horse Racing section for more details on Rule 4 deductions. Should a HORSE be WITHDRAWN not under orders in an early price race, stakes on that selection will be returned, with bets on other runners in the race subject to a deduction in accordance with Tattersalls' Rule 4(c). Should a GREYHOUND be WITHDRAWN in an early price race, all bets on that selection at an early price nominating either name or trap number will be void. Bets on remaining runners will be subject to Tattersalls' Rule 4(c), unless a reserve runs in which case all bets will be settled at starting price.
  5. Where a selection is made void it will be treated as a non-runner for settlement purposes. For singles bets stakes will be returned. For multiple bets that selection will be treated as a non-runner with and stakes will run onto the remaining selections in that bet.
  6. Unless specifically advertised or displayed on the website, we do not accept Place Only bets without an equal Win bet, with the exception of pari-mutuel bets on overseas horse racing. In any other circumstance any place stake will be made void, win or lose.
  7. Settlement will be made on the official result except where specific rules indicate otherwise. Subsequent changes in results for any reason are disregarded for settlement purposes.
  8. All bets will be settled by reference to all available evidence and information. Markets based on game statistics etc will be settled with reference to the statistics and results provided by that sports governing body (with the exception of obvious errors).
  9. On all Horse Racing markets the weigh-in will define the official result. Any subsequent changes to the result after the weigh-in will not count for settlement purposes.
  10. Winnings will be credited back to a customer's account once a result has been finalised and we consider that there is no reason to suspect there will be any changes.
  11. Marathon reserves the right to recover from you any funds incorrectly credited to customer account and to adjust customer balances to rectify errors (for example, if a result was reflected incorrectly).

7.4 Any to Come (ATC) Bets

  1. Any To Come Bets, such as Round Robin or Flags, will be accepted win or each way. Where an each way bet is stipulated and there are insufficient funds running on to cover the whole of the bet, the win part will be given precedence. Any additional stakes after the win part has been satisfied will be apportioned to the place part.
  2. If a selection is a Non Runner in an ATC bet then that stake will be invested as part of the ATC money on the other selections.

7.5 Ante-Post Betting

  1. Ante-Post prices are those offered on
    1. Horse Racing prior to the final declaration stage.
    2. Greyhound events up to and including the semi-final stage. Any bets placed after the semi finals or on a single race event will be settled on an early price 'non-runner - no-bet' basis and Tattersalls' Rule 4(c) will be applied in the event of a non-runner.
    3. Any other events (except on the result of a match), regardless of the day that the bet is placed.
  2. Ante-Post bets are accepted 'all in run or not, entered or not'. Stakes are lost on an Ante-Post bet if a selection does not take part, unless the Sports specific rules state otherwise. No Tattersalls' Rule 4(c) deductions are made from winning bets except in the circumstances of rule 1 part (ii) above.
  3. If a race is postponed to another day:
    1. Ante-Post bets placed before the entries have closed will stand and will only be made void if:
      a. The race is abandoned or made void.
      b. A horse is balloted out under Jockey Club Rules of racing.
      c. The venue is altered.
    2. Ante-Post bets placed after the entries have closed will be void, except when:
      a. The race is run at a later date at the same venue.
      b. The entries are not re-opened.
      c. The running surface is not altered (e.g. Turf to Dirt/All Weather or vice versa).
  4. Ante-Post bets are settled at the price and place terms applicable at the time of acceptance. Should an incorrect price or place terms be given in error we reserve the right to settle the bet at the correct price or place terms that were available at the time the bet was struck.
  5. Where the same selection is backed to win two or more Ante Post events in an accumulative bet a special combined price will apply irrespective of their individual prices at the time. Where no special combined price is available, e.g. a horse to win a Guineas trial and the Guineas, settlement will be based on the first available odds after each leg has been completed. If the website does not show a special combined price at the time a bet was placed we reserve the right to amend the prices according to these rules.
  6. If a horse is balloted out of a race then all bets placed on that selection will be void, Ante Post or otherwise.
  7. Marathon rules apply to all instances not covered by these special Ante-Post Rules.

7.6 Each Way Terms

  1. The place part of each way bets on horse and greyhound racing are settled using the following place terms
    HORSE RACING
Non Handicaps Number of Runners Handicaps
Win Only Under 5 runners Win Only
    1/4 odds, 1,2 5 - 7 runners 1/4 odds, 1,2
    1/5 odds, 1,2,3 8 - 11 runners 1/5 odds, 1,2,3
    1/5 odds, 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners 1/4 odds, 1,2,3
    1/5 odds, 1,2,3 16 or more runners 1/4 odds, 1,2,3,4

  2. GREYHOUNDS
    Under 5 runners Win Only
    5 - 7 runners 1/4 odds, 1,2
    8 or more runners 1/5 odds, 1,2,3
  3. On occasions we may offer enhanced place terms on certain events/races. This will be displayed clearly on the website and in our Special Offers section.

7.7 Handicap Betting

  1. Handicap – an advantage or disadvantage of a competitor or team, expressed in goals/points/games/seconds etc. which is given by the company to the participant of a competition.
  2. When calculating a handicap bet, the handicap that has been given to the participant of a competition is added to total amount of goals/points/games/seconds etc. If the result turns out to be in favour of your selection then handicap bets are considered to be winning, otherwise bets are considered lost.

If the result becomes a draw after taking into account the handicap, then:
    1. If there were no handicap draw odds offered, stakes on single bets will be returned. For multiple bets, including accumulators, that selection will be treated as a non-runner.
    2. If handicap draw odds were offered, then bets on a draw, taking into account the handicap, are winners. Bets on handicap wins for either selection are losers.
  3. Depending on the particular sport, handicap bets may be accepted on a regular time, extra time, overtime, penalty shootouts etc. Please familiarize yourself with the betting rules for each sport in section 8.

    Examples of handicap bets:
    1. You place a bet on Charlton (handicap +1.5). On the bet slip this will be displayed as: Charlton (+1.5) with the odds for this selection. You are betting on Charlton to win, draw or lose by not more than 1 goal. In these cases your bet will be a winner. If Charlton lose by 2 goals or more, your bet loses.

Assuming that Charlton lost 1:2, we add handicap +1.5, which comes to 2.5 for Charlton. Therefore handicap bets on Charlton are winners.
    2. You had a bet on Barcelona (handicap -2). In the bet slip it will be displayed as: Barcelona (-2) with the odds for this selection. You are betting on Barcelona to win by at least 3 clear goals. If Barcelona draw, lose or win with only 1 goal difference, your bet loses. If Barcelona wins with 2 clear goals (for example 3:1), then
      1. If there was no handicap odds on a draw, stakes on single bets will be returned. For multiple bets, including accumulators, that selection will be treated as a non-runner.
      2. If there were handicap odds on a draw available, and you had a bet on Barcelona to win with a (-2) handicap, your bet will lose. Bets on a draw (with a handicap) will be winners.

7.8 Related Contingencies

  1. Multiple bets are not accepted where the outcome of one part of the bet contributes to the outcome of another, unless a specific price is displayed for that eventuality.
  2. If the website does not show a special combined price at the time a bet was placed we reserve the right to settle related contingency bets as such where the selections clash. For example, a €20 double, Federer to win by 3 sets to 0 and to win the match outright is settled as 2 x €10 singles. However, where the related parts of the bet are resolved at different times the bet will be settled as instructed, with the price for the second or subsequent legs being determined at each individual stage. For example, €20 double Federer to win semi-final at 8/15 with Federer to win the same tournament outright at 13/8, is settled as a €20 double, Federer to win semi-final at 8/15 with the price for Federer to win outright being the first available odds after Federer has won his semi-final. In the event of Federer losing either the semi-final or the final the bet is lost.

7.9 Forecasts

  1. Forecasts are accepted in horse and greyhound races of 3 or more runners. In certain other sports a fixed odds price might be offered on a specific finishing order.
  2. In horse races, bets are settled as straight forecasts in accordance with the Computerised Starting Price forecast returns.
  3. In greyhound races all forecasts for BAGS/BEGS meetings are settled as computer straight forecasts.
  4. Unnamed favourites or 2nd favourites are not accepted in forecast bets.
  5. If a race is reduced to only two runners all forecast bets will be settled as a win single on the selection nominated to finish first.
  6. Should a selection become a non-runner in a forecast, the bet will be void. In reversed or combination bets each forecast is treated separately. In 'with the field' or 'the field with' bets if the selection nominated with or against the field is a non-runner, the bet will be void.

7.10 Tricasts

  1. A Tricast is where you name the first, second and third in correct order for a race where a tricast dividend is declared. In certain other sports a fixed odds price might be offered on a specific finishing order.
  2. If a tricast bet is taken on a race where no tricast dividend is declared, the bet will be settled as a straight forecast on the selections nominated to finish first and second. The third placing will have no bearing on the settlement.
  3. Where one selection is a non-runner, the bet will be settled as a straight forecast on the remaining selections which must finish first and second in the order given.
  4. Where two selections are non-runners the bet will be void.

7.11 Favourite Betting

  1. The favourite is the horse or greyhound which is returned at the shortest odds.
  2. Where you nominate the favourite and two or more runners start at the shortest odds, then your stake is divided equally over the two 'Joint' or 'Co'-Favourites created. For example, where two are returned at the shortest odds, then these two are joint 1st and 2nd favourites, and the next shortest price runner is the 3rd favourite.
  3. Stakes will be returned on single favourite bets where the return, regardless of the result, is less than the original outlay. For example, 10/11 Joint Favourites, 11/4 Co-Favourite of four etc. Where the situation occurs with 'joint' or 'co-favourites' in an accumulative bet the selection will be treated as a non-runner.
  4. If the favourite should be withdrawn before coming under starter's orders, but too late for a new market to be formed, that favourite will be treated as a non-runner for settlement purposes, unless a particular bets' rules stipulate otherwise.

7.12 Claims and Disputes

  1. No claims or disputes will be considered more than 12 weeks after the date that the original bet was settled. All long term bets can be checked by viewing the Bet History page online to verify they are accurate.
  2. In the first instance all claims/disputes should be raised with our Customer Care department.
  3. Subject to clauses (1) and (2) above all disputes must be taken to our regulators, the Curacao Gambling Control Commission. Their website can be accessed using the link at the bottom of the website.
